Saturday, September 19, 2009 Agawam, MA - On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Strikers traveled one town over to play host, Agawam. The larger playing field seemed to suit Southwick as they took advantage of their speed and passed the ball well. Maggie Sullivan, Rachel Diamond, and Emra Toomey anchored the defense and cleared just about everything that came near them. In the first half, Maggie Sullivan worked the ball down the right side past several defenders and scored to give Southwick a 1-0 lead. Southwick had several more chances as Liz Tenerowicz, Aelish McGivney, Fiona O'Donnell, and Madeline Grucci kept the ball in the Agawam end, but the Agawam defense managed to hold them off. Agawam then came back and tied the game before the half. In the second half, the Southwick passing was even crisper and Zeleda Madera scored to give Southwick back the lead. Agawam again came back to tie the game at 2-2. Aelish McGivney, McKenna Leary, and Korina Simons helped keep the pressure on in the second half and finally broke through when Leary put in the 3rd and decisive goal to give Southwick the win. Gillian Ensign and Leary split goal tending duty for Southwick and had several key saves. Final Score - Southwick 3 Agawam 2
